Garage Door Remote

Everyone knows that now a days "Rolling Code Technology" is used for the remotes used to open garage door. Every time you use the remote, the code changes. As a result of that, code grabbers fail to get the new codes. In this system, the code that was used at the last no longer works because there are some settings in the system so, the code is changed automatically.

Earlier, the remote transmitters were same as the bomb detonators, which were used in World War – II. Means, they were using the same single frequency. So it was too easy to open a garage door using any of the remotes. So there was not any security in that.

“DIP switch” transmitters were developed in 1970's. They were the first ones to provide the security. 8 DIP switched were used to set the frequency for the transmitter in one remote. As a result, there were maximum 256 possible combinations for the codes. It was a much better solution at that time but still was not that secure.

Sadly, some owners took benefit of this protection option by altering some settings in the DIP switch from the factory default settings. It was still no problem for the robbers to search operators they could turn on with a transmitter that was set at factory default.

So, these were the problems with the earlier remotes. And this problem was solved, when the "Rolling Code Technology" for the remote codes came into the picture. Every time when you use the opener, the codes changes automatically. A system creates a new code every time using the encoder. And it ensures that the same code would not be used again as it is having billions of code possibilities.

Whenever you buy new remote control, you will find all the code setting instruction as well as installation related instructions with it. You will also find the instructions to reprogramming it on your choice as and when required. And it also provides the steps to erase the codes before reprogramming it.

Communication between the Remote and the Opener

There are different radio frequencies available those can be used for the communication between the opener and the remote. DIP switches are used to adjust these frequencies between them. If you want to make your garage safer then, you must reconfigure the switch settings in DIP switches.

What Is DIP Switch?

A DIP switch is a tiny block made of plastic. It is about the half size of a dice. Red and Blue are the colors usually used for them and they have about eight to ten small layers of white switches position having only two states down or up. Your device would be connected to the opener if and only if the up down pattern for the switches are same on both devices.

DIP switches can be easily found on the opener and the remote control clicker. If you do not found it in remote's battery compartment, you have to open the remote. First of all, remove the screws that are holding it together and then separate the both layers. Once you find the DIP switch inside it, just try to match the switch positions with opener's switch positions. The pattern should be same in both the devices. It doesn't matter how it is looking like but, make sure that it should be random so it would be difficult for the others to guess.

If you are having any garage door opener or you are planning to buy one then, make sure that you change the settings. It might look secure but don't forget the installer and anyone working with him knows the frequency switch settings when it is installed initially. And keep one thing in mind that you can not trust everyone. So, it would be better if you change your switch settings pattern and test whether it is working or not.

Problems Regarding the Remotes

Some times it happens that even if there is a small problem in the remote but it looks like there is something wrong with the garage door. Some times you may face a problem when the garage door may open itself even if you didn't use the remote to do so. In this case there could be a problem with the contact band inside that remote. And you would be agreeing that it is very easy to check the remote compare to the garage doors. You can just remove the back of the remote and find that narrow strip on the board if it is located just above the battery. If you find the strip compressed and pressing not in favor of the brass contact, then there is a problem there with the remote. And it is the time to buy a new one.

If you already are having the remote and if you want to replace it, it is very easy to find a replacement. Just take that old remote with you whenever you are going to buy new one. But if you are not having the remote or you lost the remote and are not being able to open your garage door, it is important to know the number to buy either the same model or any new compatible model that could open the door for you. A small piece of detective work is required on the chief power head that is on the ceiling of the garage, if you want to get the correct remote. If you find a small antenna there, follow it to the switches. You may have to remove the light bulb coating, if you want to search those switches. No need to remove the cover of power head. Trace the antenna wire carefully and find the correct frequency number. That number will help you to get the correct remote.
